About GotThat
GotThat is a live translation app for group conversations. You put your phone on the table, several people talk in their language, and you read live subtitles in yours, with each speaker labelled. It is made by JBC NETWORK K.K., a small company in Japan.
GotThat (gotthat.cc) is a web and iOS app that listens to a conversation between two to five people, shows subtitles in your language within about two seconds, tells speakers apart as A, B and C, and offers three helpers: a one-line topic summary, a catch-up of what you missed, and reply suggestions in the other side's language. Nobody except you needs to install anything.
Why it exists
Most translation apps solve one sentence at a time: you speak, it translates, the other person speaks, it translates. That works at a counter or a ticket office. It falls apart at a dinner, a seminar or a party, where four people talk over each other and nobody waits for your phone. GotThat was built for that second situation by someone who lived it: a foreigner in Japan who could handle a one-on-one conversation but sat silent through every nomikai.
What it does and does not do
- Does: live subtitles in Chinese, English, Japanese, Thai or Turkish; automatic detection of the language being spoken; speaker separation for two to five people; topic summary, catch-up and reply suggestions; a recap when you stop.
- Does not: work offline (it needs an internet connection); keep your audio unless you tap “Save”; guarantee word-perfect transcripts. With many people, a loud room or similar voices it will sometimes label the wrong speaker; you can tap the name on that line to fix it.
- Free tier: 10 minutes a day, no sign-up. The web app runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers; the iOS app is on the App Store; Android is coming.
How it works, briefly
Your phone's microphone streams audio to our servers, where speech recognition, speaker separation and translation run on third-party AI models (we do not train our own). The subtitles come back to your screen as they are produced. Audio is processed and discarded; only if you save a session are its text and audio kept, and only in your own account. The full policy is in the privacy policy.
Who makes it
GotThat is developed and operated by JBC NETWORK K.K. (JBC NETWORK 株式会社), a company registered in Japan. The product was previously known as “wakaru”; the older address wakaru.cc still works and shows the same site, and the web app lives at app.wakaru.cc. Contact: support@wakaru.cc.
Press and partnerships
Logos, screenshots and short descriptions in five languages are on the press page. If you write about translation apps, live captions or life as a foreigner in Japan, we are happy to give you a trial and answer questions.
Try it at your next dinner, class or party. No sign-up, nothing for the others to install.
